Artificial Oesophagus

Macer Mechatronics is developing an innovative artificial oesophagus designed to restore food transport after oesophageal resection while preserving the stomach in its natural position.

Unlike conventional gastric pull-up procedures, the concept combines active food transport, intelligent sensing and bidirectional reflux protection within a compact implantable system. The objective is to reduce surgical complexity and improve the patient’s long-term quality of life.

The technology integrates:

Active food transport
A mechanical transport mechanism moves solid food continuously towards the stomach and reproduces the essential function of natural peristalsis.

Intelligent sensing
A spectral sensor detects food intake and distinguishes between solid and liquid contents, allowing the system to activate only when required.

Anti-reflux protection
A bidirectional valve is designed to prevent gastric reflux while still permitting natural gas release and vomiting.

Adaptive energy management
Position sensing and inductive charging support efficient operation of the implantable system.

Several prototype generations have already been developed and tested. The implantation concept was evaluated in an anatomical surgical environment, and the central transport mechanism, sensor technology and anti-reflux valve have been functionally demonstrated. Further engineering, durability testing, biocompatibility validation and regulatory development are required before clinical application.
